Deer Creek Animal Hospital’s Fun Day For the Dogs
Deer Creek Animal Hospital was proud to serve as the title sponsor of the 25th Annual Summerset Festival Fun Day for the Dogs, held on Sept. 20, 2009 at Clement Park. Hundreds of pet lovers and their pets stopped by the DCAH main stage and booth where veterinarians and staff members were on hand to answer questions, provide free pet dental exams and distribute some fun giveaways for humans and their pets. In addition, kids were treated to creative Balloon Sculptures by Skiddles the Clown and took home some temporary artwork thanks to our airbrush face and body painting artist.
Deer Creek’s master of ceremonies Sam Lane, DVM, held court on the main stage which featured a day full of events including a pet/pet owner look-a-like contest, trivia contests, rescue group and pet adoption opportunities, and demonstrations regarding pet health.
The day was capped by a special 25th Anniversary tribute to Deer Creek employee Nikki Vaughn whose family and friends gathered at the main stage to celebrate this remarkable accomplishment. (read Nikki’s story by clicking here).
See the pictures below for a visual recap of a wonderful day for Deer Creek, its clients and friends in the community.
DCAH Dog Wash Success
The 23rd Annual Dog Wash at Deer Creek Animal Hospital was a huge success. Volunteers from DCAH and The Children’s Hospital Prescription Pet Program washed 300 dogs and raised approximately $7,000 which all goes to the Prescription Pet Program -- a dog-assisted therapy and visitation program at Children’s which began in 1984.
Since 2000, Deer Creek veterinarians, Markee Kuschel, DVM and Laurie Thornton, DVM have volunteered their services to provide a rigorous health and behavioral screening of dogs participating in the Prescription Pet Program to help ensure a safe visit with children being treated at the hospital.
In 1984, the first dog in the program, accompanied by medical staff, made 20 visits to children in the oncology unit at The Children’s Hospital A written prescription from the child's physician was necessary for a dog visit. This was the origin of the name Prescription Pet program.

Deer Creek Animal Hospital Dog Wash for Children's Hospital
The 23rd annual Dog Wash is just a part of the long-term commitment by Deer Creek Animal Hospital to The Children’s Hospital Prescription Pet Program. Since 2000, Deer Creek veterinarians, Markee Kuschel and Laurie Thornton have volunteered their services to provide a rigorous health and behavioral screening of dogs participating in the Prescription Pet Program to help ensure a safe visit with children being treated at the hospital.
